I was making a list of amusing moments from Nora's birth, which I don't think I ever wrote down. So here they are:
- The weirdness of knowing exactly when it was going to be, since it was a scheduled c-section.
people would ask me when the baby was due and I'd say "december 10, 2:30 pm" and they'd look at
me kind of funny
- E kept saying "i can't belive she's in here [point at belly] and then she'll be out there
[point outside of belly]". she had trouble getting ove the metaphysical hump
- She also kept saying "it's weird that we go to the hospital with an EMPTY CARSEAT and when we
come back there's a BRAND NEW PERSON IN IT." my contribution: "it's like the baby drive-thru
window!"
- I got to be in the operating room for the actual birth, and got to wear the crazy spacesuit
- E looked great in her OR outfit, especially since the cap matched her eyes
- The OR was crazy. it was a huge bright room full of all kinds of equipment and stuff, of
course. and there were like 8 people in there, all chattering like it was a cocktail party. our
doctor (dr. McD) put on some music and it was playing xmas music. I asked if she had any
chanukah stuff and she switched the station -- the music playing when they started was bobby
mcferrin's "don't worry be happy"
- I was sitting by E's head holding her hand, with a sheet hung between us and the action so
we didn't have to see it. she was awake but numbed below the breastbone. you can kind of see the
sheet in the OR pic
- Throughout the procedure, the two anesthesiologists were standing by, just chit-chatting about
anesthesia stuff. at one point I heard one of them saying "AND THEN WE HAD TO USE THE SIX-INCH
NEEDLE" and told E not to listen to them
- Nora was squirming around so much they had trouble getting her out (we could hear them talking
about it of course)
- At one point dr McD said "hey you got that on my facemask". we didn't want to think about the
amount of blood or whatever going on on the other side of the sheet. later, when I got up to see
Nora on the side table, i got a glimpse of a pretty bloody looking sheet and was glad I couldn't
see what was going on
- Doctor McD also said to her assistant "don't sew that up in there" and E said "you know, I
can hear you. please don't leave anything in there"
- We had three top names going in and planned on picking from them when we saw her. Nora was
probably the top candidate. when she came out and they were cleaning her up over to the side,
E told me to go over there and figure out what her name was. she just seemed like she
couldn't be anything but Nora
- For E the whole thing was surreal. she was completely awake, and a couple feet away from
her a bunch of people were pulling a person out of her body. she could feel them doing things,
and feel pressure, but of course couldn't really see or feel what was happening. then next thing
you know, hello, new person!
- Nora yelled a lot the minute she was out. a lot of sound for such a small package
- Officially: born 3:10 pm 12/10, 6lbs 2oz
