QAT

books, words
Ever wonder about that supremely useful Scrabble word QAT? It's a "green twig chewed for its amphetaminelike properties", and it's also making one town in Kenya really rich.

QAT is one of my favorite scrabble words. So are MM and AA.

I also love that SUQ is a word, even if it's most likely a waste of an "S."

I wonder if QAT is the most-used scrabble word in the world? I think it gets used, like, every other game.

or maybe "ax"?

well I think AX is probably pretty evenly distributed with OX, EX, XI, and XU. whereas the only real competition for QAT is QUA.

In tournaments, you more often see QANAT and TRANQ played. QUA is risky because of all its hooks and extensions (QUAG, QUAD, SQUAD, etc.); you have to be very careful where you play it lest you set up a monster play for your opponent.

ISTR someone doing an analsys of a large number of tournament games, and indeed, QAT was the most often played word. Once the tournament word list based on OSPD4 comes out, QI will dilute the popularity of QAT somewhat, just as AX/EX/XI/XU dilute each other.

see, this is why I prefer Dirty Word Scrabble(tm) to the normal kind. none of this memorizing-tiny-but-high-value-words hoohah.

J and I tried that, and it got pretty silly. We don't know enough dirty words, surprisingly.

the way the Vancouver crew played it, anything that *could* be construed as a dirty word was playable... as long as you were willing to justify it (and thus show how deeply in the gutter your mind was.)

that's what we were doing, some things were a pretty big stretch

I don't know. I was mildly turned on by that game.
